2023 Knockout Final - Andy Williams vs Jason Hawke
The last result of the 2023 season is in! The Final of the knockout league Between myself and Jason Hawke took place on Saturday the 3rd. We decided to make it a bit more interesting and that the winner would be the angler with the best percentage of 2 different species. With this in mind we set off to a secret spot that hasn't been fished for 30 years! Fishing high up into surf on the north coast I was first to catch with an undersize Mackerel on a pop up. Not to be outdone Jason quickly responded with 2 mackerel one of which was just about a "weigher". Now lightning struck twice when lively Thornback of just under 7lb fell to an anchovie bait that i had "acquired". A little time passed and another Thorny of 6.8 again fell to my "borrowed" anchovie bait. Inside information had warned me that Jason would be taking mullet kit and browse. Being the good sport I am Ihad no option but to tell Jason that i had spotted mullet feasting on his browse. Jason didn't take long to hook and land two smallish mullet which provided excellent sport on his light tackle. Unfortunately Jason hooked but lost a much better fish which made me really sad. At this point I decided that I shouldn't be such a good sport and decided to distract him be casting his Vass jacket over to Toll point (which is a long way from the North Coast!) Jason unfortunately didn't manage any more mullet but did land a small gar. Jason also joined the Thorny catching club landing a fish of about 4.8. As the light started to fade Bites on our bottom rods came steadily with dogs, whiting and small huss keeping us busy. At the end of our allotted fishing time I came out as the winner with my Ray of 6.15 and a Whiting of 1.6. All in all it was a very enjoyable day thanks Hawky for your company!!
This competition was great fun thanks to all who took part especially those i fished against. I would especially like to thank my sponsors IE Dave Ferguson and Martin Fudge Williams who supplied my Anchovies on a couple of occasions must say they seem to work, might save up and buy a pack of my own for next year!
Hopefully everyone taking part this year will enjoy it as much as I did last year!
